This paper analyzes two of the great mysteries of the antiquity: the image of Santa Claus and the belief in immortality of the soul according to the believes of the megalithic man. Because Santa Claus is not advertising image of Coca-Cola, as many think. And because this mythical hero, celebrated all over the world, is completely unknown for the people and he is incorrectly compared with images of Saint Nicholas and Jesus Christ. An attempt to clarify his nature and essence will take the reader far back into the past of the megalithic culture. And the most amazing is that there are everywhere traces of Bulgarian etnonim and unknown pages of Bulgarian culture which are closely connected with the good man Santa. This study represents the most serious argument for their authenticity.

Today, when Bulgaria is a full-fledged Member State of the European Union, it is a privilege and spiritual gratification for us to recall that the centuries-long history of our country has always been connected to and formed together with the history of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Reading through this absorbing work, which has been diligently compiled by our church researcher Mr. Boris Tsatsov, the reader will find many images and events which occurred in the course of time, and will thus feel the ever-burning spiritual flame which guided our forefathers through their lives and service.    Bulgaria has a rich historical and cultural heritage which is shown in the illustrations of this book. It introduces the dominant ethnic groups, folklore regions and folk festivals: three elements of a whole system centred around peoples and their traditions. This book is the first one to present the national project referred to as Living Human Treasures and the national list of Bulgarian Living Human Treasures. Special attention is paid to the Bistritsa Babi and the Nestinari from the village of Bulgari (both on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity). There are more than forty thousand listed cultural monuments in Bulgaria, while state and municipal museums hold over five million valuable cultural items. Seven cultural monuments and two natural sites have been recognized as unique and having world significance and have been included in UNESCO World Heritage List. The aim of this book is, not only to make this rich cultural heritage popular, but also to emphasize our collective duty to protect it and hand it down to following generations. The short list at the end of the book provides references to further readings on the topic, and contact addresses of institutions and groups working in this area.

The historical depth, into which we can penetrate into the past of the cultural-and-spiritual center of the Bulgarian city Bansko, extends as far back as to that limit, which marks the beginning of the legends and the traditions. That is the reason why every story about Bansko, even the most common one, heard in that town, sounds lifelike when told in the irresistible in its charm Bankovskite speech, which is both music and poetry with an inimitable dramatic intonation. The conquering with its magnificence mountainous scenery, allotted to Bansko, is a perfect natural creation which has in itself been a challenge to the artists, the poets and the singers of that region to always strive for the unattainable. And it still is. The air, which the Banskovites have been breathing for ages, is fresh and, in the metaphoric sense, deprived of a spiritual pollution, saturated, today as well, with that ozone of the Renaissance, which one feels in both the architectural silhouettes of the Revival Period and in the living bond of the people with the national cultural traditions. That is why Bansko has indeed much to be proud of.
