Click to order by e-mail! The family Eresidae C. L. Koch, 1850 is reviewed at the genus level. The family comprises nine genera including one new genus. They are: Adonea Simon, 1873, Dorceus C. L. Koch, 1846, Dresserus Simon, 1876, Eresus Walckenaer, 1805, Gandanameno Lehtinen, 1967, Loureedia gen. n., Paradonea Lawrence, 1968, Seothyra Purcell, 1903, and Stegodyphus Simon, 1873. A key to all genera and major lineages is provided along with corresponding diagnoses, as well as descriptions of selected species. These are documented with collections of photographs, scanning electron micrographs, and illustrations. A new phylogeny of Eresidae based on molecular sequence data expands on a previously published analysis. A species of the genus Paradonea Lawrence, 1968 is sequenced and placed phylogenetically for the first time. New sequences from twenty Gandanameno Lehtinen, 1967 specimens were added to investigate species limits within the genus. The genus Loureedia gen. n. is proposed to accommodate Eresus annulipes Lucas, 1857. Two species, Eresus semicanus Simon, 1908 and Eresus jerbae El-Hennawy, 2005, are synonymized with Loureedia annulipes comb. n. One new species, Paradonea presleyi sp. n. is described. Eresus algericus El-Hennawy, 2004 is transferred to Adonea Simon, 1873. The female of Dorceus fastuosus C. L. Koch, 1846 is described for the first time. The first figures depicting Paradonea splendens (Lawrence, 1936) are presented. |

|
Click to order by e-mail! Based on examination of more than 6,600 adult specimens, this work treats the Nearctic fauna of Eustrophinae (Tetratomidae), a relatively obscure, but potentially ecologically significant, group of beetles associated with wood-rotting fungi in most forest ecosystems. Five genera and 12 species are recognized: Pseudoholostrophus (Pseudoholostrophus) impressicollis (LeConte), P. (Holostrophinus) discolor (Horn), Holostrophus bifasciatus (Say), Eustrophus tomentosus Say, Eustrophopsis confinis (LeConte), E. bicolor (Fabricius), E. brunneimarginatus (Dury), E. indistinctus (LeConte), E. arizonensis (Horn), E. ornatus (Van Dyke), and Synstrophus repandus (Horn). A new species, Eustrophopsis crowdyi is described from southern Arizona. An identification key, supplemented with color photographs of the body (dorsal and lateral), frontal view of head, prosternal process and other structural features, is presented. Distribution maps of known geographical rang! es in Canada and the United States (and Mexico for three southern species) are included, supplemented by detailed locality data. In addition to the taxonomic analyses, preliminary comments are made on the biogeography of the Nearctic Eustrophinae, as well as their natural history and ecological importance in forest habitats. |

ID:010851 author: David Houghton title: ZooKeys #189. Biological diversity of the Minnesota caddisflies (Insecta, Trichoptera) year: 2012 pages: 389 cover, size, type: paperback |
|
Click to order by e-mail! This work contains illustrations, statewide abundances, distributions, adult flight periodicities, and habitat affinities for all of the 277 known Minnesota caddisfly species. These species are based on examination of >300,000 specimens from 2,166 collections of 937 Minnesota aquatic habitats from 1890 to 2007. Four species: Lepidostoma griseum (Lepidostomatidae), Psilotreta indecisa (Odontoceridae), and Phryganea sayi and Ptilostomis angustipennis (Phryganeidae) are added to the known fauna. An additional 31 dubious species records are removed for various reasons. Biological diversity was highest in the Lake Superior and Northern regions of the state, intermediate in the Southeastern, and lowest in the Northwestern and Southern. Many species, especially within the long-lived shredder families Limnephilidae and Phryganeidae, have decreased in distribution and abundance during the past 75 years, particularly those once common within the Northwestern and Southern regions. Many species now appear regionally extirpated, and a few have disappeared from the entire state. This loss of species in the Northwestern and Southern regions, and probably elsewhere, is almost certainly related to the conversion of many habitats to large-scale agriculture during the mid-20th century. With aseline data now in place, any future changes to the Minnesota caddisfly fauna can be evaluated with much greater confidence and precision. |

Distributional records are presented mostly from New Brunswick, Ontario and Yukon Territory. For New Brunswick, 186 new provincial records, 11 new records for Canada, and 10 new records of adventive species are provided. For Ontario, 47 new provincial records and 25 new Canadian records are provided, and 5 species are described as new to science. For Yukon Territory, 20 new territorial records and 1 new Canadian record are provided and 9 species are described as new to science. A total of 253 new provincial/territorial records, 37 new Canadian records, and 14 species new to science are treated in this volume. Lectotypes are designated for several species and seven synonyms are proposed. All new species and many species representing new distributional records are illustrated by color habitus images and black and white images of t! he genital structures. This volume on Canadian rove beetle biodiversity contributes new taxonomic research and important baseline data, and significantly updates the known staphylinid faunas of New Brunswick, Ontario, Yukon Territory, and Canada. |

The previously described species Archaea hickmani Butler, 1929 from Victoria is here recognised as a nomen dubium. |
Click to order by e-mail! This large work on sea slugs of the Western Indian Ocean is a major contribution to our knowledge of opisthobranch diversity and biogeography. The western Indian Ocean has long been known as a distinct biogeographical region, and reports of opisthobranchs from the province have been sporadic. Despite nearly 200 years of study, recent work estimates that there are more than 1000 undescribed species in the whole of the Indo-Pacific region. There have been considerable developments in the study of many taxonomic groups for the area in the last 50 years, including opisthobranchs, and this paper describes 70 species, of which ten species are recorded from the western Indian Ocean for the first time. Many phyllidiids and chromodorids seem to have a distribution limited to the western Indian Ocean, whilst there seem to be differences in species richness between coastal areas and island groups. Further work will shed light on many of these issues. |
